Europa 2 - The True Cost of War Kindle Edition
by Nick Armbrister (Author), Andy N (Author)
This new ebook collection of work by Andy N and Nick Armbrister as well as a follow up to 2014’s Europa is as much a sequel to their previous book but is also a different way of looking at real life stories featuring ordinary people and conflict with stories ranging from World War I up to the present day.
All of these poems are uncompromising, mixing the shocking with the unseen consolidating work filling words from deep, bleak times producing hope for the future from lessons learnt in the past.

(I)
Blanket heavy
they tried to shield him
for a while
in one of their handcarts
Piling luggage
all over the top
as if he was a parcel
heading towards
an unknown destruction
And coats designed
to protect him
from the heavy batons
the soldiers carried around
like spare arms
Recoiling on themselves
in a desperate panic
to protect him
as long as they could
in the hope
things would get better
But alas in the end
it didn’t matter
not for a second.
Dissident Despair
Its 25 years this Sunday since the fall of the wall. I remember that day. As do many others. They include people imprisoned due to their actions or beliefs. They still suffer in silence for what the enemy nation did to them. East Germany.
Their jailers escaped justice and the politicians who commanded them got big fat pensions. Where's the justice? How will both sides celebrate the fall of the wall? A gap as wide as a blown bridge, uncross-able?
Today parents try to tell their children that political opposition was the right path. How to explain the fat cat politicos who studied degrees on how to silence their opponents at a Stasi funded Uni?
Even today, those titles are recognized with a fat salary and pension. Today some Stasi headquarters are museums and memorials to a dark history of informants, torture and oppression.
The victims give talks at schools on their experiences and counselling and support groups help too. Is it enough? No. Think of the force labour. Financial payouts try to amend this evil. Too little too late. Stolen years and betrayed lives.
What of newborn babies stolen from their parents? People today hang 'missing' posters on the wall of Cottbus prison. Both Nazi and Stasi committed evil tyranny here. If only the walls could talk.
